Learning Through Enquiry Alliance

Centre for Inquiry-Based Learning in the Arts & Social Sciences

Sheffield University's CILASS is committed to inquiry-based learning as the most powerful means of engaging students actively and critically as learners, and of supporting their development as creative, confident individuals who are well-equipped for a world that is characterised by complexity and rapid change.

CILASS

Our work has a particular focus on collaborative student inquiry, and on imaginative uses of information and communications technology to enhance the learning experience. We also see a key role for information literacy - defined as the capacity to find and use information effectively, irrespective of whether the information source is digital, print-based, or human - in inquiry-led learning.

Therefore, we have a commitment to developing enhanced strategies for integrating information literacy development explicitly into inquiry-based curricula.

CILASS is taking forward its work through a programme of development and innovation projects which will provide the basis for the development and dissemination of a wide range of sharable, practical resources for inquiry-based learning and teaching. The principal focus of our progrmame is at departmental level, with the aim of encouraging strategic development of inquiry-based learning and maximising impact.

We will complement this activity by strong support for inquiry-led approaches to developing new pedagogical practice and knowledge, including the scholarship of teaching in its different forms. We also plan to carry out a programme of pedagogical research which, through an in-depth, institutional case study approach, will explore fundamental questions associated with inquiry-based learning and with the relationship between research and teaching in higher education.

The Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences and Law are CILASS’s ‘core’ community within the University. However, we aim to extend beyond this initial focus over time and to act as a catalyst for a vibrant community of practice in inquiry-based learning at the University that will involve and enthuse students and staff across many disciplines and engage active involvement of colleagues from other HEIs both nationally and internationally.
